Satellite Servers

Satellite servers allow you to perform connection tests to different locations from remote test agents that you have deployed, and collect the test data at a central MyConnection Server location. Once a MCS Satellite has been deployed, you can set up tests to the satellite system in the Manage Remote Agents option in the Administration section.

By clicking the satellite servers link the page below (fig2) will be displayed:

Fig 2: Manage Satellite Servers main page.

If there are satellite servers setup they will be listed here. From this page you can edit, view or delete any of the satellite servers that have been deployed.

To create and deploy a new satellite server click the "create and deploy a new satellite server" link, as shown at the bottom of fig 2 above. This will bring up the page shown in fig 3 below:

Deploying the satellite server to a windows box is a simple process. Simply enter a name for the satellite server, for example "washingtonoffice", make sure windows is chosen in the drop down menu and click download.

Save the satellite.exe to your system. You can then distribute it via email or download to the machine you want it run on. When you are ready double click the exe to start the server. It will then run in the background on that machine, whilst giving you the dialog box shown in fig 4 below:

If you wish to deploy on a Linux machine then chose the Linux option from the drop down menu shown in fig 3 above. This will give you some more options, as shown in fig 5 below:

Enter a friendly name and then proceed to download the software and the configuration file. Installtion instructions for linux are shown here.

To change settings for your satellite server click the change settings link as shown in fig 2 above. This will open the page as shown in fig 6 below:

Fig 6: Modifying Satellite Server settings

The first section is a status update on what settings are currently in force. If tests have been performed they will be shown in the view log link.

The next section is for various IP and port settings as explained below:

IP Address
(the address to which all listening ports will bind)
Control Server Port (this is the port to which RAs will connect to obtain information. If a port other than 80 is selected, it may cause firewall blocking issues)
Override IP Address (In case proxies or NAT devices cause the server to have a different external and internal IP address, you can specify which address RAs will use to connect to this server.)
Override Port (In case RAs need to connect to a different port to the one specified above, specify that port here.)

The next section is for enabling and disabling the tests you want available for the satellite server in question. In fig 6 all the show options links have been expaneded to show which port settings need to be set.

Once all the required settings have been changed click the udpate satellite server button to save the settings.

The new satellite server will now appear on remote agent test server lists so you can test from one remote location to another.
